Freddie Hubbard & Art Blakey - Moanin'
Tips to become a good drump master
Drums rank right up there as one of the coolest, most fun instruments to play. They’re an almost indispensable part of most popular music – better still, nothing beats coming home after a hard day and drumming your blues away!
So you want to be a drummer, but don’t know where to begin? Fear not: here’re some of our tips for you to become a good drummer:
- Know your drums. A typical drum kit has six parts – a cymbal, a floor tom, a pair of toms, the learn drum, a snare drum and a hi-hat. Before you start playing, familiarize yourself with these components. Knowing what goes where will help you progress faster.
- Don’t shy away from starting small. Maybe you just begin with reproducing a song, beat for beat? It’s a good enough beginning! And it’ll help your sense of rhythm to drum along with songs you know well. Try some basic 4-beat songs to begin with, like “Yellow” by Coldplay or “Alone” by Heart.
- Develop a strong beat sense. This is the most important requirement for a drummer: he should be able to maintain beat! If you have trouble maintaining a steady beat, practice with a metronome. You could also try tapping your foot while you drum.
- Get your technique right. This includes your hand positions, wrist movements, and touch. Focus on each of them as you drum - with a strong and precise technique, you build a solid foundation on which you can build endlessly!
- Practice! There’s no other way round it, really. Good drumming doesn’t come easy. At a beginner’s level, you should be practicing at least for an hour every day – but focus quality rather than quantity! Start each practice session with a clear idea of what you wish to accomplish in that session, and structure your practice accordingly.
- Listen to music with great drumming. This is important! Try out rock drummers like John Bonham (Led Zeppelin), Nick Mason (Pink Floyd), Neil Peart (Rush), Bill Bruford (Yes) and Phil Collins (Genesis) - and jazz drummers like Buddy Rich and Art Blakey.
- Solo. Drum solos and torrins India are a great way to express individuality and creativity. Plus, there are no actual rules about what makes a good drum solo! How you play it is completely up to you and your style. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and solo.
Now get drumming! Good luck!
