Punk Goes Classic Rock Album Trailer (Hot Topic)
Rock Albums U2, Sayhi And Alternate Routes
The new rock albums of 2009 are the ultimate distraction from the economic downturn. In the past, rock and roll centered on political corruption, overseas turmoil, and other relevant social issues. This year, artists seem to want to escape problems rather than face them head-on.
U2
U2's new album, No Line on the Horizon, was released March 3 by Universal Studios. Due to the band's popularity and staying power, the album is a bit hard to find at the moment. While you can buy it for a low as $9.99 at Wal-Mart and Amazon.com, you may find both stores to be out of stock. For the next week or so, your best bet might be to go through iTunes, where you'll have to shell out $17.99 for the deluxe edition.
The new album is classic U2 sound. Fans on iTunes are calling it their "fourth masterpiece." Most of the songs on the album deal with love and relationships. The chorus on the single, "Magnificent," croons, "Only love can leave such a mark/But only love/Only love can heal such a scar."
As with the previous albums, No Line on the Horizon delivers well thought out musical composition, mellow guitar riffs, and catchy lyrics. It's a crowd pleaser, and it seems to have set the bar for major rock and roll artists for 2009.
The Alternate Routes
The Alternate Route put out their new album, A Sucker's Dream, on February 24 of this year through Vanguard Records. While its bio on iTunes claims that the record is about braving the economic downturn and simply plugging on, the lazy feel of the album conjures a pleasing daydream more than a reminder of what we must face in real life.
As the Alternate Route's name suggests, the band is an alternative to traditional rock and roll, is independent, and still quite undiscovered. The concequence of that is that the album is not avaiable through mainstream mega stores. The good news is that the album is available through Amzon.com for $13.99 or through iTuens for $9.99.
A Sucker's Dream relies heavily on accousitc sounds that channel vintage pop stars like Elton John and Cat Stevens, but also surprises with more edgy, electric songs like "The Future's Nothing New." Indie music fans snapped up this album quickly, but this band isn't likely to stay a secret for long.
Say Hi
Say Hi (to your mom) is a band that took charge of social networking sites like Facebook and Myspace to gain popularity. Now they've arrived, as iTunes has featured their new album, Oohs and Aahs, on their popular new music page. Oohs and Aahs is Say Hi's sixth album, and while it's not available in mainstream mega stores yet, it's available for $13.99 through Amazon.com, $9.99 on iTunes, or for $12.00 through Say Hi's personal website barsuk.com.
Oohs and Aahs was released this year through Barsuck Records, and it follows the Say Hi suit. The mellow guitars, the prominent drums, and the Indie "emo" vocals all cater to a younger generation. Perhaps that's why Say Hi, a band primarily performing in the Seattle area, gained such notariety through their Myspace page alone.
That's not to say that an older generation can't sppreciate Oohs and Aahs as well. The lyrics on this album, as well as Say Hi's previous five, are catchy and light hearted, and are generally pleasing to listen to.
